  1. It sounds like you're in the same shape on hunting that I am on computers and a few dozen other topics. In short, I don't even know enough to know what I don't know....

The other posters are right. If your friend is a hunter, he'll love sharing his knowledge with you. We all like to show how much we know (even when we don't know what we think we do) :) Trust me, he won't be annoyed. He'll love sharing what he knows.

Take it slow, and pick up information wherever you can. There's a ton of info on the web, and in books, and there are dozens of magazines dedicated to the topics of hunting, shooting, and gun collecting. Stop by a gun shop and ask about calibers and applications. Go to a shooting range that rents out handguns and try shooting them.

Above all, be safe. Take a safety training class, and make safety way more important than anything else out there. The second most important thing is have a good time!

  2. If he's any kind of friend and Outdoorsman he won't be annoyed by your questions he will be excited to share his knowledge with you.

  3. outdoor life mag. they also have a book club ,or go to the library, they have tons of books and videos, and its all free, that way you can take your time and learn,

contact your local dept. of natural resources, and take a hunters education coarse, that too should be free

  6. You can read books and magazine articles about hunting but you must get out there with someone more experienced and gain that first hand experience. Ask questions before the hunt, keep it to a minimum while hunting and more while your butchering game.

  7. he wont mind if you ask him because i now a guy that is kinda like you and they always ask me.

  8. Do NOT get advise from VP Chenny!

  9. most hunters enjoy teaching others to hunt. Just let him know that you do not have alot of experience.

  10. By all means ask him. All Hunters love to talk about hunting even if we think we are boring our friends. LOLO

  11. You need to take a hunter safety course and get your hunting license.  You'll enjoy the hunt and respect for the sport as well as the company of your friend.

Your friend would be glad to answer your questions, because hunters love to share experiences with others..

  12. There are a couple of things you can do.  But first is taking a Hunter's Safety Course through the Department of Fish and Game in your area or State.

These courses are of course about general safety, but the instructors are also normally a wealth of information provided you are willing to ask questions, and listen to the other folks taking the class.

As a part time Range Instructor myself, I firmly believe that when it comes to safety courses there are no stupid questions.  Even a question that you may somewhat know the answer to, but just need clarification, is a good question.

There are many books and magazines that are geared to hunting and fishing, (Field and Stream), is just one of many that are very good sources of information.  The NRA Publication, (American Rifleman), is another excellent source of information, beyond their political articles.

But your friend, should not be too annoyed with your questions, however, its best for you two to plan a trip to your local range and have your conversations there, as asking questions out in the field, can easily spook your game animals.

If you are unfamiliar with firearms in general, then it would also be prudent to seek out an instructor in your area, and spend some time on the range with that person so you learn how to be safe with your rifle.

Most instructors, (self included), may even throw in some handgun safety, and range time, so you can understand the importance of being safe.  Yes its easy to get casual, after you have received some minor training, but the key is to remember that your are dealing with a loaded firearm, and your attention to detail is very necessary.  You are going to be a very long distance from any emergency personnel in most cases, so an accident with a firearm is very serious.

Anyhow, good luck, and I hope your hunting adventure is a profitable one.

  13. every county has a hunter safety course its cheap .and you will be more knowledgeable on the subject.go to the library they have books and magazines on hunting.so dose the inter net.

  14. the first thing you need to do is get a bigger gun then him

the chey tac m-200 .408 will peirce steal at 1.5 miles so i think that is big enough

  15. Dude, go to your local Gander mountain or *****. Got to the hunting section of the store and begin to ask questions for the ppl that work there. Or just add me to your friends and ill be glad to answer any ques. you might have.

  16. Believe me, he wont mind answering any of your questions- The only way to learn anything to start with is to ask- don't try to be "cool" and act like you know a lot, just ask! You can get on the hunting forums on the net and learn a lot from there also. Hunting is just too big a subject to learn from the few paragraphs that are available to you here> Good luck,!

  17. Well first we would have to know what you know so far and what type of hunting you and your friend are doing and with what type of stand(if any) and what type of weapon.  there is alot of types of hunting. some are way diff. than the others.

  18. I put together a website exactly for questions like this.

    http://www.oldhunterrumors.com/

After hitting the file icon, it's all downloadable with a right click.

  19. By all means annoy him

If he is a true hunter he will gladly teach you

Tell him that you want him to teach you to be as good a hunter as he is

Be up front about your level of ignorance

One of the greatest regrets of my life is that I did not want to seem like a weenie to my friends and ask them to teach me

  20. ask him  he should be happy to share his knowledge and be glad your trying to learn. My boyfriend loves it when I ask him stuff about his interests

  21. Go ahead and 'annoy' him if he is a true hunter, like me he will love to share all of his knowledge just let him know that you do not have much experience and i'm sure he will have lots and lots of storys and tips to share with you, thats one great thing with hunters they don't get annoyed even if you ask them a trillion questions about hunting they love the sport and love talking about it, enjoy it over a fire.

  22. I general if someone has a passion for something, they have no problem sharing their knowledge on the subject. Just ask your friend your questions and after a couple question ask if your question annoy him, that's what a i do (you will never know until you ask)

  23. I'm not sure what region you live in but most states offer thorough hunter's safety education classes on-line.

  24. I can tell you that if I was him, I wouldn't mind if you asked me a bunch of questions. One of the roles of a good conservationist is the willingness to educate others.

  25. I don't think he would mind answering any questions you have.....Outdoorsmen are usually happy to help a newbie.

  26. I am a certified Alaskan hunter safety instructor - by all means, ask away to your friend.

If you have a simple question - these are probably best to look up and find online.

Most of the fine points of hunting - what to do, what not to do - you need to learn while out in the woods.  The problem is most hunters are not in the woods until it is already hunting season and everyone is serious...........not a good time to take along someone who does not know how to walk quietly.  The solution is to go out in the off season and photograph animals - this is a really good opportunity to learn valuable lessons and not cost somone getting their deer - if you can get close enough to take a good pic, you are close enough to get off a good clean shot.

Most hunters prefer to teach thier hunting partner.  This way they know the person will know how to do things right.  Too often you meet someone who can talk a good hunt....... but they can't hunt near as good as they talk about it!  So don't worry about asking too many questions.

When it comes to firearms - there is no stupid question.

    Hope this helps
