A quite country road is where I learnt. Try an emergency stop at 25 mph. Then try it at 45. Then try it at ??? mph. You will soon learn that any dhead can drive fast. It's the stopping that counts. Keep it upright.

contact MSF and sign up for beginner's riding course. They provide motorcycles for this course. Usually requires you have your mc permit first, and once you've passed the course some states will waive the DMV skills test and put the endorsement on your license. Best wishes.
