  1. If this is the first time you'll be driving a stick, try this -

With the vehicle parked and the engine off, put the parking brake on...Next step on the clutch and just move the gear shift lever to each gear position as shown on top of the gear lever, including reverse...Remember, the only time you step on the clutch is to change gears or just before you come to a stop...You want to be in the proper gear for the indicated speed: 0-10 mph - 1st gear, 10-25 - 2nd; 25-40 - 3rd, 40-60 - 4th, 60+ - 5th...Use this guide for both accelerating and decelerating.

Take your time and be smooth.

  2. Learning to drive a standard is very easy.  Learning how to do it smoothly takes practise.  Find a big, empty parking lot and practise, practise, practise

  3. The clutch is your friend! Don't use it to much or you will burn it up.

    Remember:

1 Press in clutch....make sure gear is in neutral

    turn ignition key

2 put in 1st gear and slowly/evenly release clutch...while evenly pressing on gas.

(the release and pressure of the clutch and gas should be about the same, until you start accelerating).

3 Let your rpms get to 2500 or 3000 before you shift to 2nd depending on gear ratio.

    (when you shift...repeat process):

    depress clutch

    let off gas

    put in next gear...clutch/pedal work

    and you are goldin.

watch out for stops on hills.

when you stop, push in clutch until ready to engage.

  4. firg has the right plan remember that if you have to hold a car on a hill use the emg brake it will help you. because you cant step on the brake the clutch and the gas at the same time. and remember smooth!!

  5. Trial and error in a parking lot or some back road somewhere.

Practice makes perfect.  The hardest part is getting it going. Every stick is gonna be different.

    Good luck

  6. once you have learned to drive and know the rules of the road and all that it is much easer to drive a 5 speed it is all I have ever driven, i have shown all my friends to learn to drive them.  It just takes pratice and patience, start in an empty parking lot and just relax.

  7. A hint:

A car stalls when it doesn't have enough gas going to the engine for the gear you are in. Thus, when you shift into higher gears, the engine needs to have more gas or momentum to prevent the car from stalling. The car's momentum usually is more than sufficent in preventing the car from stalling.

Two things you can do to prevent the car from stalling:

-The car cannot stall when you are in neutral (or your foot is all the way on the clutch). If you are consistently stalling or your find yourself about to stall, work on giving more gas or picking your foot off the clutch slower.

-It doesn't hurt to give the car a little extra gas when you're learning. Gas is getting expensive but it might be okay to blow a few extra bucks if it means learning this important skill. Remember, the car stalls when it doesnt have enough gas so if you give the car enough gas (assuming you're shifting gears correctly) it will be impossible to stall!

  8. just gotta practice, i learned to drive a stick in one day, and took a couple weeks before i got it down good
