Is it about what YOU think the Australian identity is, or more about the Australian identity in general? I'd start by narrowing that one down.

If it's more general, then try a more varied search. smh.com.au will lead you to a picture archive, and you can get inspired to search further. The Australian Museum also has archives, and so do any number of media sites. It's a question of categorizing your search so you can include anything relating to Australian history right through to the present day, and the possibillities are endless.

A way to do this with a theme could be through art. You could include Aboriginal and European artists (there were a number of them documenting the early days of European settlement) and find examples all the way from rock art from several millennia ago, up to (for example) the work currently being shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the Sydney Biennale.

Along the way there are iconic artists such as Streeton, Margaret Preston, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Albert Namatjiri and (why not) Brett Whitely, whose work represents various times and attitudes very effectively. Plus they painted the landscape and the people, so you can make a good picture out of theirs and also reflect the diversity and richness of Australia.

The handy thing about using art as a unifying theme in a collage is that is historically and culturally relevant, since art was and is a reflection of cultural identity, and it also looks good assembled into another work of art!
