So my girl scout troop is doing a nature garden, and sensory plants and birshouses, and we need a windchime. So my job is to research how to make a windchime, home made. We were thinking Pcb (or whatever theyre called) pipes, but that would just make a hollow sound right? So what can we use to make a beautiful sounding winschime. thanks!!!

  1. Get some old silver spoons and tie them handles at the top if you can't bore a hole in the top of each.  The uppermost one that all the others are hanging from, hang it vertically with the tines bent in all opposite directions.  Hang each spoon from a tine.  Bend the end of each tine so the strings won't slide off.   Hammer the scoopy ends flat so they are wider.

  2. Go to a hardware or Home Center and buy short pieces of copper pipe in different diameters. Drill holes through one end to connect the string to hang it from a piece of board. Make sure they are close enough together to touch when the wind blows.

  3. If you are making birdhouses other than just for show, you should take into consideration the fact that wind chimes, especially those made with metal pipes, are often used to scare off birds. Maybe you should decide which is more important to you, the chimes or the birds.

If you decide to forge ahead anyway, here's a wind chime made with jingle bells.

  4. Hello Bubbles:

The plastic pipe is polyester vinyl carbonate (PVC). It won't make much of a sound when used as a wind chime. The other suggestions of metal pipe are good, however if you have a limited budget, you might want to try bamboo. You can pick some up at a garden center or home center. The bamboo will have joints between each open cell. Just cut the bamboo near the joint, and drill a hole in the top of the joint from which to hang a string.

  5. Use pipes made of copper or aluminum or any other metal. Cut them different lengths. The bottoms should be cut on an angle. Drill holes through both sides of the pipe (about 1/2 inch) from tops. Cut round disks of wood about 5 or 6 inches across. Drill holes the width of the pipe. In other words. If you pipe is 3/4 inch wide the holes should be 3/4 apart in the wood. I think 5 pipes looks the nicest. So drill 10 holes (5 pairs 3/4 inch apart) in the wood spacing them evenly. Get a s***w in hook and insert it in the middle. Weave heavy clean fish line through the top of the wood and them in and out a pipe and back up through the wood. I hope you are understanding this. It's a little hard to explain in writing. You should polyurethane the wood first so it doesn't rot or crack. Hope they come out good.
