  1. I just went outside with a flashlight and measured our deck steps.  They were installed by a licensed carpenter and are supposedly to code (?).  They are 24 inches from the deck floor to the ground and we have two wooden steps.  The first step down is 7", then the step itself is 11" in depth. Then we step down another 7", then the next step is another 11" in depth. Then we step down another 7" to the ground. The 3 foot-wide, wood steps are made of two planks butted together out of 1" thick, weather-resistant cedar.  The overall finished stairsteps do not jut out 3 feet, however.  They jut out only 2 feet.  Have you considered putting down a couple decorative stepping stones or brick pavers to fill in the extra foot of empty space between the end of the standard steps and the edge of the grass?

P.S.--Also, according to code, I think that you have to have a hand-rail if you install two or more steps. I suggest that you stop by a Lowe's or Home Depot.  When you first walk in the door, there are racks of instruction books and many are on how to build a deck (including the stairsteps).
