2 ATP that goes into fermentation comes from glycolysis but fermentation doesn't actually "produce" ATP, correct?

  1. You are correct.

    Glycolysis uses 2 ATP molecules to "kick start" the process of glucose breakdown and produces 4 ATPs further down the process giving a net gain of 2 ATP. In anaerobic conditions  the pyruvic acid  produced in glycolysis is fermented to either lactic acid (animals) or ethanol & CO2 (plants, yeasts). No further ATPis produced in fermentation.
