It can be any dance style, to any song. I would love to do something that looks really good, but I'm not a brilliant dancer. I need inspiration. The main styles of dance I do are IDTA Latin, Ballroom and disco freestyle. I've done up to gold bar 2 disco exams and have samba, cha cha cha, rumba, square tango and rock n roll one-dance medals. I've also done a tiny bit of ballet, jazz, street and contempary as part of GCSE. Please help.

  1. if you're not good at movement improvisation... i think the best place to start is doing moves you know well and that you think you could pull off well. high kicks and jumps/leaps tend to impress people.

once you compile all those moves, start doing them but changing them a bit so long as it still feels good/okay.

if you're not brilliant... changing levels always shows finesse and more skill than you may have. I love being on low levels because it looks brilliant when its not that hard.

putting in tons of energy is always key. just do movement that feels good and organic (like they flow together --not like movements put together).

i love the hip action from the samba and footwork from all latin ballroom.. maybe incorporate that?

if you really want a strong base... try taking improv classes or contemporary classes. after two semesters of movement improv classes, i feel as though i can dance (at all times) as though i'm performing without having choreography prepared.

  2. i do jazz and pop and just make up moves that really express you and that are big!!! but not to big and bragy!

  3. Dance is the music interpreted into movement and as long as your body's movements reflect the music being heard, you cannot go wrong.

Kate Bush was amazing at interpreting her music into dance, you can see her videos on You Tube. Have a look, I am sure she will inspire you.

  4. how about hip-hop?

  5. Well if I am trying to make up a dance, I find it extremely useful to go into my room put on some music (any) and just dance.

This makes your moves less choreographed and more flowing in my opinion. It lets your body do the talking and then you can just choose which piece of music made you dance the best.

Like put on some hip-hop and if your body happily makes you grind, then that's the right type!

If you put on a slow, beautiful piece of music and you start to dramatically ballet dance, then that's the right type!

Basically let your heart choose it for you, then properly choreograph the dance later.

This works for me, hope it helps!
