  1. R22 is gradually being phased out, and replaced with R410A.  Neither is superior, they will both function exactly the same, and it will be many years before R22 is completely unavailable (much longer than the life of any air conditioner).

R410A is more expensive than R22, and if you are replacing an existing air conditioning system, the lineset will either need to be replaced completely, or flushed out with a chemical made specifically for that purpose.  With R22, you can simply reuse the old lineset.

  2. R-22 will not be made in the USA after 2010 but you will still be able to get it. For you as a home owner you need to know that the two different systems use oil that do not mix. If the old system is r-22 than you can put in a new r-22 system no problem. It is just the newer equipment r-22 might require a bigger suction line for the seer you put in.

R-410a requires that all the old oil must be removed from the old line set if used. Or just replace the line set. you can check prices at www.anchoraireservicesinc. Many questions must be answered before you change out the old system, air flow in older homes is the biggest problem. Returns must be the right size or you will not get the seer that the system is rated at.

  3. R410 is the newer type.Better???

  4. R-22 is one of the old refrigerants that still contains "greenhouse gasses".R-410 is one of the newer refrigerants that requires additional training, and specialized equipment to install and service. R-410 also has a somewhat lower cooling ratio than R-22, therefore more cooling is required for the same area. Both will work fine, long story short...410 will cost more than 22, both for installation and service. In another 5 to 10 years, 22 will no longer be available. Your choice.
