But they are so freakin' heavy. My husband has began to break them up, but the electric jack hammer, after 8 hours of labor, is barely touching them. He has tried pulling them out with our durango, but they hardly budge. Please help! Any ideas will help alot.

  1. 20lb sledge hammer.And lots of sweat.Good luck.

  2. well...if you want to get them out with a jackhammer, you'll have to rent a big air compressor(the kind that comes on a trailer) and get a 90 pound air jackhammer-electric ones won't cut it.  Most steps are sitting on a 'step footing' so there may be either some pillars that go underground, or two short walls that go down a few feet in the ground, and if they're pinned to the footing then the steps will be almost impossible to budge, other than jackhammering.  Another way to get rid of them is to get a skid steer with a hydraulic jackhammer attachment.  The air hammer hits way harder than an electric one, and it'd take you about 2 hours to get them broken up if they aren't solid.  The only other way to get them out is heavy equipment(like a pay loader or hydraulic excavator or backhoe).  But, best bet (and cheapest) would be the air hammer.  Oh, and for weight wise- concrete weighs about 4,000 lbs a yard, and a yard is a cube that's 3 foot by 3 foot by 3 foot- most three riser steps with a 6x6 tops that are poured concrete take about two yards....so your looking at 4 tons of concrete!  The only other option is to talk to a  heavy equipment contractor and see how much it'd cost to have them come and pick the step off and haul it away- you'd be surprised that it may only cost you a couple hundred bucks...and no labor.

  3. Sledge hammer - go for the edges and corners first - wear protective goggles. and steel toe boots and stay out of his way - its mans work. :-D
