It seems many places that rent trucks are not wiling to let you tow anything with them. Uhaul has a only 2' ball hitches and they can't be removed to use the bigger ball. Trailer and boat weigh under 5000, and I need to rent a truck in California to move it one time about 100 miles. Anyone know of anyplace that will rent me a truck for towing?

  1. Even if you ball was 1 7/8" you should be able to lock down on a 2" ball shouldn't you?  Try Penske truck rentels.

  2. What size is the receiver on the trailer tongue? You should be able to rent a truck from Lowe's or somewhere and temporarily swap out the hitch ball, unless they use a locking pin.

Otherwise, find out the actual weight of the boat and trailer (should be in the manual and stamped on the trailer). You may be able to swap out the tongue receiver to a 2" and just use the one on the truck. Be careful, though, there are weight limits for each size of hitch ball.

  3. Why not go to a boat yard and ask them how much they would charge to move it for you.

  4. Here's the best solution, and one I have used many times. (watch the thumbs down come out on this one!)

Find a buddy who has a truck that will pull your boat and borrow it from him/her. Offer cocktail cruises on the boat in exchange for use of the truck and I guarantee you will find takers.

  5. next time you go out stop a couple of tow truck drivers and ask them if they will do it on the side maby even in the middle of the night when it is slow and the boss is sleeping

  6. If I had to move your boat fast it would be best to call a flat bed tow service. 100 miles will not be cheap but if you look at all the risk factors involved with using your friends truck or even the condition of the bearings in the wheel hubs on the trailer you will be better off in the long run. Remember this when you are dealing with boats" nothing is cheap but an ounce of caution could save your life!!!"
