sounds like someone wants to coast the easy way on this, sorry you said you (need) to do this, therefor remove w/h and do your business

If u don't want to pull the W/H out.  U can caulk the main drain cover to seal out the methane gas from leaking out.  Still the best way is to get assess to the drain cover and use proper tool to remove/ replace the cover.
