I think there is a pin you have to drive out, then it will come off.

there should be a clip holding the gear on, remove the cover and look at the top of the starter gear,

is it  CRAFTSMAN? on the starter push up the gear spring thing than start engine

There is a clip on the end of the starter shaft.  Remove the clip and it will come right off.  A new gear is about $5.00
