we are working on growing things. i was going to have somebody come from walmart to talk about gardening should i do that or should i have a vet come talk to the kids about taking care of animals to help them grow . some of things we did was plant flowers in little cups, made a chart about what grows and don't grow and a paper an let the kids check off what grows and does not grow . i read several books about plants and animals growing . and i made flowers out of paper plates construction paper and tissue paper . i also so talked to the kids about what we need to help people animals and plants grow, and i also read a story about apples let the kids count the seeds inside the apple and talked about what other fruits have seeds inside of it

  1. I don't think I would get the "guy from WalMart" unless you know him and he's good with kids and would enjoy speaking with a group of young children.  Look for a local gardener, or a parent or grandparent from your class who is an avid gardener.

And there's nothing wrong with having a vet come!  They can talk about what animals need to grow and be healthy and you can extend that into a lesson on what we people need to grow and be healthy.

Another idea would be to have someone who has a trained therapy dog come visit with the dog.  The kids would find it fascinating.  These animals serve the elderly and the sick and are often very helpful companions.

  2. the vet sounds a lot more interesting, especially if he can bring along some animals!  I don't know how you are going to get a gardener to be interesting without having them plant things which they have already done.

  3. No one is going to care about the Walmart sales guy and even if he was any good he'd be sales oriented. I think a better idea would be to an actual gardener or the own of a prize winning garden or prize winner of a growers contest. That you will get someone who is really interested in their subject plus it looks good on paper. A vet could do the latter but at such a young age it's better to get the kids planting seeds and taking things home rather than thinking about animals in distress!
