It's a faux leather cloak with velvet lining and I need to figure out how to sew a twisted cord on one side that wraps around a button on the other side for the closure.

  1. Try looking here:

  2. If you go to a fabric store and ask for a garment "frog", the directions for application are on the package.  These are commercially made, and come in all different colors.

  3. Since you don't strictly say a Neck closure, or waist sash type, the problem is easy to solve.

For a neck closure create a ROD POCKET, similar to that on cafe Curtains. for a belt sash, stitch loops at the appropriate area around the waist.

Backing up just a bit,,, you can still HIDE the attached end of the cord with the same fabric...OR stitch the cord INSIDE. I'll assume this closing, might overlap one side to the other? In which case the BUTTON would not strictly be at the leading edge.

Is this a Costume? If so, I might just stitch Velcro onto the opposing edges.

  4. a blanket stick work good here....

under  over , then feed the thread back thru it self ... very strong , and holds well ....
