My boss is Orthodox Jewish and wants to teach her daughter's classmates about safety. She would like it to do something where food is involved.

  1. Maybe use sweet things vs sour things. Link oranges with good safety things and lemons with dangerous things. Not sure just a passing thought. Good luck.

  2. Safety is a good idea for that age.But what dose being Jewish matter .Do Baptist or Catholics teach different safety than Jews?

  3. These are two that came from the Parents Healthy Kids Magazine I picked up at the docs office. They don't involve food, but are interactive.

    First one:

    Why we should wear helmets,

Enclose a ball of clay inside a plastic egg.  Drop it, roll it around.   Open the egg and see how the clay has kept it's shape.  Now drop it on the floor and see what happens.

What to say:  "This plastic egg protects the clay the same way a helmet would protect your head when you are riding your bike or scooter.  If you were to fall off your bike when you weren't wearing your helmet your head could get real banged up."

    Second:

Wear seatbelts!   Have child choose a plastic person ore animal and toy truck.  Place the figure on the car and send the vehicle skidding across the room, or into a wall.  Point out how the the plastic figure flew off.  Now help child strap the toy to the vehicle with rubber bands.  Send it skidding again, and watch how the figure stays put.

What to say:  "Mom and dad are very careful drivers, but theres always a chance the car will hit a bump or we'll have to stop suddenly.  You always need to wear your seatbelt.  It'll keep you safely in your seat, just like this little figure stayed safely in its place when you strapped him down."

  4. Decrease your intake of soda and juice. One 8 oz. glass of either one has approximately 100 calories. Drink milk with meals instead.

Plan a nutritious snack between meals. This will help prevent over-eating at meal time.

Choose nutrient dense foods such as fresh fruit, yogurt, cottage cheese, or thinly sliced cheese with a few crackers as your snack.

    What is MyPyramid?

The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) has released the MyPyramid food guidance system. It represents a personalized approach to healthy eating and physical activity. Along with the new MyPyramid symbol, the system provides many options to help us make healthy food choices and to be active every day.

    What is nutrition?

The process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism absorbs food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues.

Why do chefs have to be concerned with nutrition?

People have become more aware of the fact that food nutrition plays an important role in maintaining physical health and well-being. Chefs must be aware of the nutritional value of the dishes that they create. This helps the culinary professional meet the growing needs of their customers.

  5. Easy!

Show them some good old fashioned road kill, this will teach them not to play in the roads.

    Nothing like road baked possum!

  6. "Don't eat the brownies."
