  1. Find x:

    2x + 26 = 10 - 6x

    x + 13 = 5 - 3x

    4x = - 8

    x = - 2

    Find y:

    = 2(- 2) + 26

    = - 4 + 26

    = 22

    Answer: x = - 2, y = 22

    Proof (2nd equation):

    22 = 10 - 6(- 2)

    22 = 10 + 12

    22 = 22

  3. It's simple: You have two things equal to the same thing, in this case y,

    so you have two things equal to each other, thus:

    2x + 26 = y = 10 - 6x

    2x + 26 = 10 - 6x

    8x = -16

    x = -2

    and

    y = 10 - 6*(-2) = 22

  4. y=2x+26=y=10-6x

    8x=16

    x= -2

    y=10

  5. This is a simple problem.  Since both equations have y on the left, the two right sides must be equal, that is,

      2x + 26 = 10 - 6x

    Add 6x to both sides, resulting in

    8x + 26 = 10.

    Subtract 26 from both sides, resulting in

    8x = -16.

    Divide both sides by 8, resulting in

    x = -2.
