I have a couple here like router, modem but I understand there are a bunch more.

  1. This depends on the network, really. If you're trying to gain Internet access, then you'll need that router and modem. For a regular computer network between computers, you'll need the following:

    Computer System (with Operating System installed)

    Network Card (could be wireless or wired Ethernet)

    Network Hub (or a Switch)

    Ethernet cables (CAT-5) to get the signal to each computer (if the network isn't wireless)

    If you want internet access for a small network of computers, you'd need a Router in place of the Network Hub (or Switch), the Modem to get a signal, and the software involved if there is any.

    For larger, more commercial-based networks, I am not sure. I would imagine there would be at least one master network hub, and switching stations that feed into it from respective office nodes. But again I'm not sure about those...
