My stepfather just took a 1999 nissan truck to Mexico. He had to show the title with his name on it. He also had to pay a fee of $380. They said when he brought the truck back through he would get it all back, they keep it if you don't come back through.  He sent the tag back in the mail last week and said he has already changed the truck and got Mexican tags. He didn't have any problems. Just don't forget to keep insurance on the vehicle until you turn the tag in so you won't get a fine.

If you are planning to take a car into Mexico to sell, think again. It will remain on your Visa as long as your passport is good, and you won't be able to drive back in to Mexico. The Mexican government takes a very dim view of this type of transaction. You are allowed to drive one vehicle in and expected to drive it back out.

To get in you need the following

Valid proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate).

The appropriate immigration form (tourist card).

The valid vehicle registration certificate, or a document, such as the original title that certifies the legal ownership of the vehicle. It must be in the driver's name. If the car has a lien, you need a letter from the bank giving permission to take the car into Mexico.

The leasing contract (if the vehicle is leased or rented) which must be in the name of the person importing the car. If the vehicle belongs to a company, present the document that certifies the employee works for the company.

A valid driver's license, issued outside Mexico.

An international credit card, also issued outside Mexico (American Express, Mastercard or Visa), in the name of the driver of the vehicle.

If you are talking about taking a car to Mexico to sell or give to a family member or friend...you need to know that ONLY cars that are EXACTLY 10 years old may be nationalized in Mexico.  They keep talking about changing that law...but so far they have not.  Only 1998 cars can be nationalized in Mexico.  There are car "brokers" at all the border crossings that have the proper paperwork for you to fill out if you have a '98 car to take into Mexico.  Then the person you give it to can register it at their local Palacio municipal.  If you are planning to live in Mexico and keep your car there with you , it is easy.  Just get a car permit from the nearest consulate or at the car permit office at the nearest border town...it is good for as long as your tourist visa is good and must be turned in when you leave.  If you have an FM3, the car permit is good as long as your FM3 is good.

If you are asking about a rental car - NO WAY!  US car rental agencies will not allow you to drive a rental car into Mexico even if you intend to return to the US.  If the car is stolen or damaged while in Mexico you are responsible for the full repair or replacement value of the vehicle.  This will be stated in the rental agreement and when you rent a car in a border state (CA,AZ,NM,TX) the agent usually advises you of this verbally.
