I have an old laptop (about 8 or 9 yrs) that I want to install Windows XP on. It is a Sony VAIO. There is a sticker on the front of it that says Designed for Microsoft Windows ME, so I'm hesitant to try. Please help! (btw, I'm not very adept at computers)

  1. you need the MINIMUM of 128megabytes of memory and 1GHz processor, if your laptop doesnt have that, then you cant run it.

even if you did have 128MBs and 1 ghz procesor, windows xp will be REALLY SLOW......

  2. Windows XP was the expected upgrade from Windows ME; that's one thing XP was designed to do because ME was such a disaster.  Get a legitimate copy of Windows XP (I'd recommend the Home Edition), and install it.  ME will have provided the drivers you need, and XP will provide the upgrade.

Once you've upgraded to XP, be SURE to add Service Packs 1 and 2; there is a third out out there as well, but the first two are CRITICAL.  There's nothing to the upgrade; just put the CD in the drive and follow the directions.

  3. You might be able to run it but it may also be very slow after the upgrade.  Check to see if you have more than 1gb of ram and a decent hard drive 60gb or better.  However, I think you should just get a new system that have it preinstalled.  You avoid the hassle and problems (and you will have porblems with the old hardware) that you will face.

  4. Check your specs. You need at least 128mb or ram, but I wouldn't install it if your laptop has any less than 256mb or ram. You should have a processor over 1Ghz also. Check your specs by going into control panel, and 'system'.

Running XP with anything less would be pointless as it would run too slow. Also Windows ME is dated but still a capable operating system, especially on older machines.
