Incase something happens like someone breaks in or something im a young girl living on my own and i am alil scared of not being able to hear if someones breaking into my flat or something. But im finding it hard to sleep with all this noise from my neighbours. What is the likelyhood i will get used to the tv and banging which goes on all night from every direction of flats i live in? And whats the chances I will get broken into? Am i being a scaredy cat?

  1. I don't think that you are being unduly cautious, however I don't feel that ear plugs are the best idea.

I like to run a fan in the bedroom, to help defuse the sound and to help me relax.

It also allows me to hear when I need to.

  2. Hearing impared people have alarms that either shine a bright light into their eyes or shake the bed.  Your local government may have a social agency helping the hard of hearing.  They maybe able to recommend a handyman able to install such a system for you.

  3. did you just move in recently? it usually takes some time to get adjusted to the noises... you may get used to the "tv and banging", or it may be something that continues to bother you, its tough to say...

even with wearing earplugs, its possible to still hear some sound, so if there were to be loud noises in your apartment (ie someone breaking in) you would still be able to hear them.. now if they were to break in very quietly, then you wouldnt hear them with the earplugs, but you probably wouldnt hear them without the earplugs either...

ask your building manager and neighbours if there is a history of breakins in your building...

and no, you're not being a scardy cat, its normal to be weirded out when you're at a new place (especially when you're cutting off one of your senses)

  4. You are not being a "scaredy cat."  But, I would lose the earplugs for the reasons you state. There are some things you can do to minimize the noise you hear in your apartment: add curtains to the windows, carpet, etc.

I would put a deadbolt lock, and a chain lock, on your door. Both can be done by a locksmith for a reasonable sum.
