  1. I'm kind of amused we still have to prove that corporal punishment is a bad idea in schools. Still... if needs be, here's a short guide :)

    Intro

    - the idea of 'firm but fair' is often used to describe ideal punishment - but is fair, and for that matter, effective to use corporal punishment in schools? In the next few minutes I'd like to show that not only is it ineffective in dealing with belligerence - or students who won't do their homework - it's counter-productive. The truth is that if a child is doing something wrong - playing instead of doing their homework, for example - then a sharp wack with a paddle is probably going to encourage them to get on track. However, it was also cause a variety of harmful side-effects.

    Point One

    - Firstly, let me define 'corporal punishment'. When I use the phrase, I refer to any punishment which involves the teacher making physical contact with the student. This may involve spanking or the use of a birch or cane.

    Point Two

    - Self esteem. This is diminished when a child receives corporal punishment.

    Point Three

    - A study released by the American Paediatrics Association in 2004 demonstrates that children who receive corporal punishment are more likely to develop aggressive behaviour as adults. To quote it: "The more children are spanked, the more anger they report as adults, the more likely they are to spank their own children, the more likely they are to approve of hitting a spouse, and the more marital conflict they experience as adults."

    Point Four

    - Corporal punishment needs to get progressively more violent if is to remain effective. This is true to an extent of all forms of punishment. Take 'lectures' from parents as an example - after a while, aren't we all just hearing white noise? And so they raise their voices. It's the same with corporal punishment.

    Point Five

    - A 2002 study by Elizabeth Gershoff, in which she reviewed sixty years of study into the effectiveness of corporal punishments, demonstrated that whilst corporal punishment produces short-term compliance it has no positive bearing on the child's long term behaviour. What, you may ask, does a teacher care about a child's long term behaviour? Well...start spanking a child and you may find out that a year is a very long time indeed.

    Conclusion

    - I'd like to reaffirm by belief that corporal punishment should not be allowed in schools. To quote Ellen Key, "corporal punishment is as humiliating for him who gives it as for him who receives it; it is ineffective besides. Neither shame nor physical pain have any other effect than a hardening one.” If we must have corporal punishment in classrooms, let us use it on the teachers.

Good luck with your speech :)

  2. It's not going to be easy for a student to write about corporal punishment from a neutral standpoint.  But you don't need to write as if you are unbiased.  Anybody who would believe that a student is  eager to get his butt swatted or somesuch by his teacher is probably too stupid to know how to read.

Just throw-in something about how those in charge do have a problem maintaining discipline but that CP should be a last resort...and even then only before the student is big enough to reverse the process.
