A torrent is a small file that is associated with specific content.  When the torrent is opened in a bittorrent client, transfer of that content begins.

First you need a bittorrent client.  This site reviews quite a few and suggests the best free ones and has setup guides for the sugggested ones:

Torrents are files that tell a Torrent Client Program where to download a certain file from. For example, say you download an audiobook or something, and you get a .torrent file.
