Keep it simple;

1. About the Artist (1-2 paragraph Artist Statement/Bio, with a pic. of you.)

2. Artist CV/Resume (single page worth, with pics. of the shows you've been in.)

3. Gallery (gallery of your images, 1-20 images)

4. Contact information(Studio name,business hours,email, mail,ect.)

Notes:

- Include a "visitor counter" so you will be able to see how many people visit your website.  

- Post the last date you have updated "[ Last Updated - Aug. 10, 2008]." This will help your viewers to determind how current the information on your website is.

If it is an Art Business site, keep it short & sweat. Gallery owners only have less than 10 seconds to anylize you before they go to the next artist in line. The first few words will break or capture interest. Update the website frequently.

make the layout decorative, stylish, neat, and easy to understand/follow.  Do not make it complicated where the user is so lost that they're just not gonna give your site another glance and then just leave.

This is a hard question to answer since we do not know what niche or subject you want your website to be.

Like mentioned, make your website layout easy to follow.

Do not use Flash or other scripts that make your website nearly impossible to load for your visitors - remember that many web users are still on dialup.

Make sure you provide plenty of useful content for your visitors. You want them to leave your site with satisfaction so they will return and tell others about your site.

Make the colors easy on the eyes. Nothing gets rid of visitors faster than garish/harsh color combinations.
