  1. If this is a dsl connection, when you cease the phone line you also stop the internet service. It may be the desktop is illegally latching onto someone else's wireless.

  2. have you typed in a number the router has imprinted on it, in your wireless connection. if you haven't, do it and press connect, then open explorer and it should all be fine. or probably you don't have a wireless card which is used especially for laptops to pick up a signal from the router.

  3. Could be that you don't have your network properties configured properly. Or could be that the ISP doesn't have a proper DNS configuration for you. Either way, you'd get signal but no connection.

  4. the connection stregnth is how well it reads to youer roughter, if there is no internet connection going to your roughter than of course you wont have internet, unless you use someone elses

  5. try reboot, or restart, if that do not work, that

on the router, check to see  if phone line in the

dest top is live, if not no internet ,you have to

    live phone line

  6. Hmm ... Try re-installing the software, then restarting your computer.

Try turning off/pulling out the network router on your laptop for 5-10 minutes. Then plug it back in.

    Try a different USB port.

Try re-installing the wireless box on the PC which provides the net.

Hope one of these helps :)

  7. If you canceled the "home phone thing" which I would assume was a DSL service, then you should not be getting internet service from that source at all.  If the desktop is set up wireless, along with the laptop, it is possible that it is logged into a neighbors wireless network, that is not secured.

If you have a new internet service provider, and have replaced a DSL service modem with another service, it is possible that the desktop is no longer on the same wireless network as the one that the laptop is connecting to.

The last possiblility, is that the laptop is connecting to a neighbors audio network, many of which use the same type of signal as your wireless internet, but are unsecured.  They would appear to be a strong connection, but these networks do not have a link to the internet.

You should click on the icon that should be in the task bar for the wireless network.  This should look like two computers together, with what looks like a signal being broadcast from them.  Have the card scan for available networks and see if  you are indeed logged onto your own router.  If not, then you need to switch to your network to get a link to the internet.

Last thing,  are you sure the desktop is not signing on with a dial-up modem?  IF it is, then you will not have wireless service to the laptop without doing a total reconfiguration of your network.  Your router was set up to see the DSL modem as the source of the internet, with the computers sharing the connection.   If you are using a dial-up connection, you have to have the desktop setup as the main computer with the internet, and tell it to allow the laptop to connect to the internet through the desktop.   This type of connection is the only one you can get with a dial-up service, and two or more computers.   This is also far to complex a setup to describe in detail here.
