I need your brain if you're an american living in Guadalajara....?

I'm seriously thinking of ditching my job (if they don't ditch me first) and moving to Mexico. My best friend, my ex whom I'm still digging, and my extended family is there (only my nuclear family is here in the states). Ive been living in Guadalajara for 4 months minimum every year for the past 3 years. I miss it. I want to go back. I'm inclined to move there...

The thing is... my femme family has a strong history of breast cancer so I want to take care of myself. I know what Mexican hospitals are like and I don't want to go that route. Anyone use "american" hospitals? Are they ubber expensive? Is there another way to healthcare? Also, can I honestly find an awesome job there, in corporate Mexico, or anything besides being an English teacher? I love my people, I love my country (with all its faults), and I'm young and single with the freedom to move to a different country without much other worries.

Whats your opinion? Help me out here... I have a MAJOR decision to make.

  1. We travel to Mazatlan every year and have heard nothing but great things about the Sharp hospital here from Canadians and Americans alike. The doctors are bilingual and are very thoughtful and considerate of their patients.

Americans can purchase health insurance in Mexico; you will need to get a medical/physical exam.  As you are young and active you will have no problems getting insurance.

There is a cancer research centre in Guadalajara.  There is a Terry Fox run for the cure in MZT every year to raise money for cancer research in Guadalajara.  (Terry Fox was a Canadian - leg was amputated - who died of cancer while raising funds for canser research in a cross Canada trip). The run was started by employee of the Canadain embassy there.

There are NO awesome jobs paying you in $US in Mexico.  Latin Americans/Mexicans in the Corporate world are coming to Canada where there are jobs in the Oil sector so they can earn a decent living for their family.

Make sure that you have a job before committing yourself to a life of poverty (unless you have a rich sugar daddy).

Good fortune in whatever you decide to do.  I love Mexico too.
