Okay, I told you guys about my instructor that failed and entire class(if u dont know about it go to my previous asked questions and get the scoop). Well, I spoke with the dean of the college and she told me what I needed to do. So, I have to write a letter stating my concerns to the instructor of the class--but how do I come off to her without seeming like she is a bad person, though she seemed to be. How do I do this in a professional manner? By the way the letter is about her appealing grades.

Thank you guys so much,

  1. Dear Professor,

I am concerned about the grade I received in your class and I would like to speak to you about it during office hours.

First, [state your first reason for concern].

Additionally, [state any other pertinent information].

Please help me understand the philosophy behind your grading.

    Thank you,

    Your Name

Unfortunately, you cannot speak about other students' grades unless they choose to join you.  Your instructor is not at liberty to discuss anyone's grade but your own, so avoid the "everyone failed" argument.  As valid as it might be, you can't use it.

The dean would like to see you handle this on your own, as the adult that you are, before a higher authority steps in.  Sadly, this is a rapidly disappearing skill as people race to get others involved without even attempting to resolve the problem on their own first.

To keep it professional, don't say anything that could be construed as personal or an attack on the instructor, her personality, her expertise, etc.  Keep it focused on your experience as a student in that class:  what you did and didn't learn, where you struggled, how you feel you weren't supported or accurately evaluated.  Dont' be surprised if you are asked to explain why you are coming forward now, after the class is over, to speak up about a propblem that would've been easier to correct a long time ago.

    Good luck.

  2. You could write out of concern for your work in the class.  Write a calm businesslike letter telling her you were very upset that you failed the test. (Let the others speak for themselves).  Ask her to look at the test with you and to please tell you what you could have done differently to make a better grade.  If she gets sarcastic or in any way acts unprofessionally, do not let that get to you.  Stick to your purpose which is you did poorly on the test and want to know how to do better next time.  As long as you are polite and respectful you are  well within your rights.  Maybe other class members would like to try the same approach.

I don't understand exactly what you mean when you say "the letter is about her appealing grades."  Is it she or you who is appealing?

If nothing comes of this, perhaps you and several members of the class could go to the dean and talk about this matter.  Again,be businesslike and respectful.

    I hope this helps.
