My family owns a little shop next to a franklins store. Someone from the community has dumped a female cat and she has had kittens. The kittens look to be about a month old. Last night my mum and i tried to catch these kittens and their mum (who looks pregnant once again) to take them home untill the morning and then ring the RSPCA. One of the kittens ran out in front of a truck and the driver had to slam on his breaks (poor kitten was petrified) that was the SECOND time he almost got hit within 5 minutes. I need some advice on what to do. We couldnt catch them because they are really scared of people but their in bad shape. Should i ring the RSPCA up now? also my mum said they will have to be put down...is this true? =[

  1. Wherever did people get the idea that all the RSPCA/SPCA does is catch and kill animals.  They are there to help SAVE animals, and the only time they have to put them down is if they are unadoptable for medical reasons or too aggressive to be safe.  Call the society as soon as possible and let them humanely trap the kittens and mother, get them the medical care they need and adopt them out.

  2. I would say to contact a local no-kill shelter.  I don't know if the RSPCA euthanizes to make room for other cats.  Generally, kittens are pretty adoptable so I wouldn't assume they would be put down.

Call the RSPCA, ask whether they are a no-kill shelter.  If not, ask which shelters in your area are no-kill.

You definitely need someone's help to catch the kittens.  How many have you caught so far?  And are you keeping them with the mother?  Whichever shelter says they can help you might have kitten traps (which don't harm the kittens at all) or can come out to help catch the remaining kittens.

    Good luck!

EDIT :: I just saw your updated comments - ask for the Trap-Neuter-Release program.  The kittens might still be taken in if they can be socialized, but the mom will just be neutered and then released.

  3. I would call someone and get a live trap to catch them, you might have to set it a couple of times to catch them all, don't worry though, it doesn't hurt them a bit..and they should NOT have to be put down unless they are sick in some way, they can be worked with and learn to become friendly towards people.

  4. Just catch them and care for them until you can find an animal shelter that will take them.

  5. Yes, absolutely call if you don't they will die. They need to be seen by a vet and most likely they will not be put down. Many people adopt kittens they are very popular. The mama should get adopted too if she's lucky. It's better for them to have a chance then to get run over by a truck!!! They also need medical attention. I hope you have brought them inside it's not a good environment for kittens to be outside..just like a real baby!!! I think you should call that is why we have the SPCA for things like this, they are trained to do their best to help the animals.

  6. id say call any help you can get and depdin on there situation meens gettin put down, if there ill then yes, if scared and in shock they shouldnt have to

  7. Where I live, we have a feral "spay and release program". Do you have property for the cats to live on? If so, after getting the mom spayed, if she is too feral to be tamed, her best chance would be to live in a safe, outdoor environment. Although some spca's are non-kill, it's usually quite difficult fot them to find a new home for them.

I find that if a kitten is under 3 months, it's not too difficult to tame them. Call up your spca, and ask for a trap. Once you catch the kittens, keep them in a small room in your house, with nothing for them to hide behind. Give them a day or two to get used to the room, let them get used to your presence. Then the taming begins. The easiest way is often with food, that will at least make them come near you. Once they are in reaching range, slowly pick up one kitten in a towel and let it get used to handling. Usually within a week or so, the kittens should be tame enough to re-home :)

  8. No, the mom will not have to be put down. If you call a no kill shelter they will take care of her. You could also offer to foster her, which means that you would look after her until she has the kittens and they are of an appropriate age to be returned to the shelter (usually around 6-8 weeks). The SPCA will be able to catch them, you need to call them before one of them gets hit.

  9. They will put them down if they are ill but I've never heard of them putting down kittens that aren't sick. They're easy to adopt out and easy to tame even if they start out afraid of people. Call now or they will surely end up dead.
