1. We can't know what the author's argument is because we don't know what book to which you refer.

In general, however, cell phone usage, while driving has been shown to be a distraction, contibuting to the driver's lack of attention to the act of driving.

It's not the hand on the dial, it's the brain on another subject.

  2. Talking on a cell phone while driving does not cause accidents...It is a contributing factor.

The vehicle is under the control of the driver...While driving only takes maybe 5 to 10% physical ability (sitting in a comfortable seat, at least one hand on a wheel, one foot on a pedal), it demands 100% mental focus...The driver's judgement, attitude, awareness, reflexes and self control all must be tuned in to the situations that are occurring yet constantly changing while operating a motor vehicle.

If the driver is not in control of him or herself, there is no way the driver can control the vehicle.

Driving is not s**y or exciting - it is mostly boring.

There is no such thing as a 'safe' vehicle...The only time a vehicle is 'safe' is when the engine is turned off and the vehicle is unoccupied.

Failure to operate a vehicle safely, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations and pursuant to the manufacturers instructions can result in death, permanent disability and injury

  3. Here is one based on my own observations. When you are out, observe which hand is holding the cell phone. Say a driver is holding the cell phone in left hand. Ask this question, "How can that driver use the turn signals if cell phone is in left hand?" You will quickly arrive at the same conclusion I have. They can't!! How many accidents are caused by a driver not signaling his or her intentions? I suspect quite a few. I drive left handed since I grew up driving vehicles with manual transmissions. To this day, if I need to use my cell, I hold said device in my right hand. My left hand is still available operate the turn signals. Which I use religiously.

Hope this helps and Good Luck

  4. Well, no one on here is going to write your paper for you but here are just a few reasons..

Cell phones distract the drivers. The driver gets too caught up in the conversation and can't keep their full attention on the road. Talking on the phone can limit your hearing, which won't help if there's an ambulance coming and you can't hear it to pull over. Holding the phone with one hand limits your ability to control the steering wheel, especially if you need to swerve or turn quickly.

There's TONS of reasons why, but bottom line, its just not safe!

  5. They're not paying attention.

They speed up, they slow down, they change lanes unexpectedly.

You see them weaving and driving very slowly.

It's very similar to the impact of someone under the influence.
