  1. Young lady, my 15 yr old son, who doesn't live with me, called me one day and said that he had purchased a moped scooter. I told him not ride it, to push it off a cliff. The  next thing I know I'm getting a call from his mother that he'd been involved in a horrible accident on his scooter shattering both of his legs with spiral fractures in three different places. Immediately I dropped what I was doing and flew to see him. When I walked into the hospital room he cried out to me in pain, "Dad why didn't I listen to you", then we both cried. Nine, nine and a half hour operations, a year in medical care. Fortunately he didn't loose a leg and they were able to get rid of the infection in the bone with antibiotics but left with some horrible scars.....

Please don't get this scooter, cars just don't see them, people don't pay any attention to scooters. More and more motorcycle accidents are occurring because people just don't see them....your legs are too important. There are other ways of getting around, safer ways, and better ways of having fun....the risk is just too great.

  2. Why not get a Honda Rebel 250cc instead?  It's bigger (easier to see), light and easy to handle.  I was talking to a guy with one at a bike show a couple of weeks ago and his was brand new.  It only had 161 miles on it and he hadn't had to put any fuel in it yet (still on the original fillup of 2.5 gallons).  They're priced at $2,995.00 new.  You can probably get one about 2 years old for around $1500.00 or less.  Do a web search and take a look at one.  They're good for short people as the seat is faitly low to the ground (my wife, 5'2" sits on one with both feet flat on the ground and knees bent).  They look good, ride good and handle good and your friends will be soooooo jealous!

  3. I recommend the Honda scooter or the Yamaha. Wheel size is important because of the ability to recover from a chuck hole or crack in the road. The larger the tire, the easier recovery. Brands like the above mentioned make stuff that lasts. Look on eBay and you can still find scooters on the road from the 70's. The Vespa is an icon but costly and their service network  is not as large.

  4. if you pay 2k for a 50cc moped you are being ripped off most 50cc scooters are under 1k in the uk so look around im from south wales and iv seen them sell for £800 brand new.

  5. I own a Yamha Vespa125cc Scooter.  I get 70 miles to the gallon. It's good on the road at 55mph.   I like it a lot.

Always wear a helmet and safety gear while riding. I wear a reflective vest and helmet.

To Mohanks who wrote about his son. This girl is asking about a scooter not a moped.   I would never ride a moped on the road there too slow and dangerous. Sorry about your son.  Oh yeah on some like mine you can ride two.

  6. Honda Metropolitan is what you're looking for.

You can definitely look at some bigger engines though, a 250cc motor will get great gas mileage, be a bit peppier of a ride and still be very easy for a beginner to handle. Take a look at all of Honda's scooters, they have great offerings.
