On the first day of school im going to try out for JV volleyball. i really want to work on my skills and most of all i wanna be a spiker or a setter, but my coach wants me to be a libero. how can i improve on my spikes and sets and bumps???

i wanna be like one of those varsity players one day.

  1. Not every player on a team starts out great. After the coach identifies the players with the top skills, they then look for POTENTIAL. Here are a couple key things  a coach will look for,

    1) Effort - go all out. Do you best all the time. Don't let a ball drop in front of you without trying. If a ball is going between you and someone else, go for it. Don't wait for them to make the play.  Coashes LOVE players that try their best EVERY PLAY!

    2) Attitude - High school is filled with all types of attitude. Show off a positive 'tude' and you'll et noticed. Praise other players with a "Nice bump' when they make one, slap hands with other player on your team when you make a substitution or someone makes a nice play. Coaches like players that are enjoying themselves and having fun, even if they aren't the best player on the team.

    3) Practice - Between now and the start of the season, start practicing with your friends! Practice bumbing. See how many you can get and then try to break the record. It's actually pretty fun! Do the same with bumping and setting. After the 1st tryout, go home and practice what the coach taught you. If the coach sees that you've improved by the 2nd practice they'll be VERY impressed.

Just do your best. If you don't make it this year, try again next year!

  2. The position that your coach wants you to play means that you will just be substituted in when it's your turn to serve. I have seen that position before on the local volleyball team. If you want to be a setter just work on setting high and to a target, like into a basketball goal or set to a person and they can help you improve. I didn't want to be a setter but I personally would rather be a normal player than a setter because you have to get the second hit or you have to scream help or it falls. It is a really important position. Your set depends if the ball gets over the net or not. You can also practice your hitting at practice, laterals (liberos) have to hit sometimes too. (spiker, hitter, same thing) Just remember on your bumps, don't swing your arms just keep low and move to the ball with your feet and keep your arms level and try your best not to swing. I am in the mist of trying to break my bad habit of swinging. Sometimes you just can't help it and you have no time to think about it. But those habits can be broken. Glad I can help. An if you like my advice become my fan and we can become contacts, I wanna make some more contacts on my own.

  3. The best thing u can do is practice with people...or actually start playing in like small games...

  4. sets- make sure your legs are bent and you are in a "ready position" also as your setting make sure u fully extend your arms and push out!!!

spikes- practice the approach it really does help make a great kill. jump as high as you can and slap the ball downwards by snapping your wrists.

Bumps- be in  a ready position at all times get down low when you are passing and CALL THE BALL as loud as you can and if u and another player are both going for the ball call him/her off so u both dont step back and the ball drops on the floor.

    Have fun

  5. try this drill.  find a wall and practing serving the ball,  the arm technique for the spike.  second drill u can try is laiding on your back and throw the ball up in air and work on your set.  Good Luck
