  1. no, not new at all. if this is your first child and you're new to the school system then it may be foreign to you. many daycares have a peanut free policy, too. it's pretty common. my son's school has about a handful of children with peanut allergies from K-6 grade.

  2. i they didnt allow me to bring peanuts in school

  3. no its not a new thing, i know alot of people with peanut allerigies, actually its a pretty common thing.

  4. No, it's not new.  Actually, peanut allergies are about the most common food allergy there is.

  5. never heard of peanut allergies? serious? it's the most common allergy in the world!!!!

  6. Really? You never read a single guide on what you should feed a baby, despite having one yourself? Because they ALL discuss peanut allergies in the context of not giving small children peanut products.

It's an extremely long-standing thing, and it kills people. Maybe you should be a little more aware.

  7. The incidence of peanut allergies (and food allergies generally) has increased dramatically in the last couple of decades (along with the incidence of asthma, which kids with food allergies often have).  Nobody knows why, though it is less common in countries that boil, rather than roast their peanuts, and there are plenty of hypotheses about what's triggering kids' immune systems to react to harmless foods.

It's very real, though -- and very dangerous.  Please take it seriously.  I didn't know anyone with peanut allergies, either, until my 1-year-old immediately broke out in a full body rash and her mouth swelled up after having less than a teaspoon of peanut butter.  Had it been her tongue or throat that swelled, she would have stopped breathing.

The good news is there has been progress towards a peanut allergy vaccine, so maybe in our kids' lifetimes (and possibly even in their childhoods) there will be a solution to this seriously scary problem.

  8. The same warning is put on about half of the products you buy in a store as well. On the back it warns they are made in a factory that also process' peanuts.

I don't believe it is a new thing, schools enforcing it may be a bit newer but nuts are a very common allergy.

  9. Peanut allergies can be very serious, very fatal allergy.

It's not a new thing, but there has been an increase in cases of peanut allergies, the "experts" aren't sure why ( a few theories)

Some kids can not be in the same room with someone eating any type of peanuts, it's scary, especially when you go to a party and your child can't have any of the homemade cookies or cakes since there might be a trace of nuts/peanuts in them.

  10. Peanut allergies have been around for quite some time.  My children are 29, 26, 23, and 10 plus I have provided child care in my home for 20 years.  By the time all 3 of my oldest were in school, peanut allergies seemed to be at an all time high.  We had to have separate peanut free classrooms plus peanut free tables in the cafeteria.  Some school districts went peanut free district wide, but it was very hard to monitor.  There are several theories why there is such a higher incidence of peanut allergies.  Some studies suggest the increasing use of soy in formula, early introduction of peanuts, and the process of roasting vs. boiling are connected to the increase of peanut allergies.  A peanut allergry is an immune response to peanut protein and some theories suggest that the increased use of so many antibacterial products are making for a cleaner world, but also kill off the good bacteria that help our immune systems stay strong.  Frequent use of anitbiotics plus eating more processed foods also has some links to a more supressed immune system.  Peanut allergies are not new, but you most often encounter them when your children start school and spend a great deal of time with a lot of children.  This is also the most common time when children begin eating more peanut butter on sandwiches for school lunches.  There was a point in time when it seemed as if having a peanut allergy was like the ailment "du jour" and nearly everyone had one.  However, when it came right down to it, there were some who didn't have a true allergry, but maybe had a reaction once, but would still eat peanut M&M's and granola bars that contained peanuts with no problems.  I think parents and doctors aren't quite as quick to jump on the peanut allergy band wagon, but there are still a significant number of true peanut allergies.
