I am going to be a freshman this year (2008-2009) and when I was in elementary I never learned the basics of math because we were all taught around the final exam. I am really struggling and I was wondering what I should do. My family can't afford a tutor to come to the house. Should I tell my new math teacher and ask her if she can help me out? I am really scared because people in high school that I know said that math gets really difficult and challenging. And it already is for me. So please help me out. Anything would help. Thank You ... I'm really scared about my first day too. So if you can tell me any tips to get through the first day without being so scared would help also. :)

  1. Sit in the front of class (if you aren't assigned a seat), pay attention, ask questions, and show the teacher that you want to learn. If you don't understand something, ask the teacher if there is a time when she/he could offer you additional help. If she/he sees you WANT to learn, they should help you. Also, do the assigned homework and read the book.

  2. Absolutely go talk to your teacher! That is why teachers are their so, they can help you succeed!

Fear wise? Well, just go in their with an open mind and lots of optimism. This is high school, be friendly and before you know it you'll have lots of friends!

  3. Talk to your teacher. I had difficulty with math too, and then it became my best subject.

Everyday after school or during lunch I would do my math homework in my teacher's classroom. Every time I had a question they would help me out.

Teachers like this because it shows you really want to succeed. Teachers choose to teach for a reason, and it's not for the money.

You can also ask if they know any basic books you can look over. Maybe after school they could teach you the basics so you're caught up. You'll learn a lot faster with your teachers help

If you let yourself get too far behind in math youll have a hard time because it really builds on itself.

  4. Absolutely talk to your math teacher, explain your situation and ask for help.  They will either help you themselves or hook you up with an advanced math student or a tutoring group.

It's great that you're taking action early to improve your math skills.  You really do need them later in life.

EDIT:  Oh, and the first day or two is nothing...it's all about orientation, no reason to stress about that.  You'll be fine.

  5. Well im a junior now and on my feshmen year i was so scared, people told me horrible stories. when i got there and after a few weeks i loved it and everything that they told me wasnt true. Also i did struggle in math it was my worse subject. I talked to my math teacher and she did help me but she didnt always understand why i didnt get something, math obvisouly came easy to her but to me it didnt. so what i did was i went to a my friends who were good in math and they helped me.they explained it better so i could understand it. i would say ask the teacher but also ask your friends. If you do need help i would be willing to help/ tutor you. Im a honor roll/ tutor/ mediator at my school its pretty much what i do everyday. if you need help let me know. i would be glad to help or need to talk about school lol ive been there and done that.
