I was hired for a temp to perm position, my contract ended the end of July and they told me a couple days before the end of my contract that they were extending my contract an additional month. I am now starting to feel like they are giving me the run around with a hire date. The company recently merged with another so there is a lot of red tape involved with hiring me. I really just want to leave and take on more permenant employment, I dont have any benefits, vacation or sick time, I am just working! I would like to end the employment relationship immediately. Do I still need to give 2 weeks notice even though I never signed anything to extend my contract passed the end date? My original contract doesnt say anything about providing notice

  1. I guess that with the merger, things may be uncertain within the company which is why they have just extended your temp contract rather than giving you the permanent one. Once the dust has settled, it may all get sorted out.

How do you feel about the job and company?  If they offered you a permanent contract tomorrow, would you want it? If not, then you should be looking for something else.  If you basically like them, but just want a more permanent contract then it is probably worth hanging on for a while.  Nothing wrong with asking when they will be able to make the contract permanent as this was what you were led to believe when you started with them.

If you really hate the job, you can just leave.  But they will not pay you for any notice period your initial contract specifies and you will also be unlikely to get a good reference from them.  Better to give notice once you have got a new job and leave on good terms.

    All the best
