I bought a 55+ gallon filter from Walmart for my tank a few years ago and recently moved. I set the tank up and realized that when I was cleaning it to move to myy new place, I threw away the white filter pads for it. It has two chambers for the water to flow and each normally has a blue activated carbon filter as well as a second white filter pad that never needs to be replaced.

I can't find the brand of the filter from Wal-marts page and definatley cannot find the white pad to order. How vital is it that I have this? I think it helps with Nitrogen, and where can I get them?

Thanks!!!!

  1. The white pad itself is not vital, what it does is vital. I personally hate buying branded filter material, because it means paying for the name and not the job it does.

It sounds like the white pad is a filtration sponge that strains the water and holds the useful bacteria that convert nitrites?

Buy something in a plastic net that is of a similar size, give the contents to whoever it most suits and stuff the net with aquarium synthetic wool. It doesn't have to be perfect to do the same job. You know what should go there, so you can botch it. Buy something similar and cut to fit.

  2. You can buy filter media at any pet store. They sell what is called filter floss, this should work for you, or you can buy the filter sponges and cut to fit.
