Several reasons - checking out her outfit, seeing if she's hotter than me, relishing in knowing i'm hotter than her, it's just curiosity and a touch of jealousy/competition

Well, ALL girls/women DON'T do that - so just say everyone YOU know does it. (Sorry, but those were your words and you're mistaken).

The ones who do are just being critical because some women are either jealous or they just take pride in looking nice and they compare everyone.  But not all women do it, believe me.  Some just compare or compete.

I don't pay any attention to women in public, except for a smile and a hello.  What the heck would I need to stare at a woman for?  Not ALL women do this.  

But I will add that jealous women who are insecure DO do this.  They are jealous that you look so good and are so confident, so they can't help but stare and give dirty looks.  Brush the haters off!

When I see a beautiful woman, I like to look..that is all...I'm not a L*****n, I do the same thing with men, babies, little children, houses, cars, a rock on the ground, whatever...ok, maybe I just need to take my lithium and shut the f*ck up.

I don't really do this... I generally don't find myself giving someone the once over unless there's a reason... with women, it's usually an article of clothing I admire. If I love something someone has on, I'll usually go ask where they got it. I've seen women do the catty once over, sometimes followed by putting a hand on her boyfriend/husband to mark her territory. I'll never know why some women are so insecure.

I don't really look at men either, unless something catches my eye, again... like a tall guy in a pinstripe suit with a throat tattoo. : ) (grrrr)

Yeah, I'm feeling the love in this room tonight. It's the same reason why guys check each other out in the locker room. Since we are generally naked, there is not much to hide. Our honesty and integrity are out in the open for all to see.

Women are checking out the competition, looking for flaws or imperfections in their armor. For both genders, each of us need to be a little more comfortable inside our own skin.

It's not neccessarily judging somebody badly, it's just that I tend to look at the person as a whole character.  And just like I judge the characters in video games and movies, I start analyzing her from what she's trying to tell me with her appearance.

Other women are looking at the fashions.  Few walk around as emotional time bombs getting jealous as others have stated.

If I do it, its because I'm checking out what she's wearing.  It doesn't make me vain or materialistic.  I just like to look at fashion.  Especially shoes.

I cant stand people like that. I am the exact opposite. I could talk to you for an hour and if you asked me what you wore I couldn't even tell you.

Materialism has never meant anything to me. What I wear and how I look is for me and no one else and I don't look at other women for cues and signals on how to look.  

I shop and buy what I like.

But women are indeed jealous and insecure creatures and they do it for two reasons. To size you up to see if you are "worthy" of their approval or they do it so they can pick up clues on where they need improvement themselves.

Women are pretty screwed up which is why I tend to hang with those who have a brain and purpose rather than those who are brainless and have to count on their looks to get by.

I can hold my own and don't need to measure up to anyone else.  I know who I am and project myself accordingly and I can pull off any look I want but it's not the clothes, its the individual that shines through.  Thats usually when they check you out too is when they see you get the attention and they wonder what you have that they dont.  Some do it unconsciously but some do it with clear jealousy on their faces. It's easy to tell whether they are sizing you up or just plain jealous.

The young girls are especially bad....they haven't any self-esteem to start with so they are always comparing themselves in this anorexic world the media has created.

It does happen all the time.  It's a way of checking where you stand.  What does she have that I do/don't have.  I'm sure men do it also with different things like cars, homes, even wives.

I don't do it, and I am a woman, so ALL girls/women don't do it.  I don't know any women who do it.  Where do you live?  It must be a cultural thing.

If I look at a girl, it is usually because I like the outfit she is wearing, and I might even ask her where she bought it.

Lots of women give me dirty looks and I actually used to feel bad about it so do you know what I'd do? I'd wear baggy clothes and tie up my hair. Women would be nicer to me.

As I got a little older and still put up with women's dirty looks and catty c**p I decided F*CK IT. I started wearing my long hair down and wearing feminine clothing and loving the way I look.

I get the stink eye all the time but I don't care. I've spent too much time worrying if I'm making the next girl feel bad. I don't bother looking at women in public and if I ever have to get along with women at work or anywhere else I know the first thing to do is compliment her on the way she looks.
