  1. You have gophers, they make mounds of dirt from digging tunnels. If you carefully dig down the center of the dirt mound, you will find a tunnel the gopher is digging.

Moles make a small raised ridge that looks like a buried garden hose just under the surface.

Gophers will eat the roots of many plants, so if you want to avoid damage to your land scape, get rid of him by using poison peanuts, or getting a gopher smoke bomb.  They can both be obtained at your local home center / garden store.

Dig down to the tunnel, put the smoke bomb / poison peanuts in it and then cover it back up. The smoke bomb will drive the gopher to another area, sometimes to a different part of your lawn. The Peanuts will get rid of him permanently.

  2. Sounds like you have moles.  The best way (and most humane) to get rid of them is to buy one of these battery operated 'mole poles'.  It emits a noise that they don't like and will move on.  It looks like a small metal pole that you just push into the ground and leave it there.  When the moles have moved on you can remove it (remove the batteries too).  Once you have moles in the garden they are almost impossible to get rid of and I have found this the best solution.

    Hope it helps.

  3. Lumps of dirt?  Are there holes next to the lumps of dirt?  How big?

Without holes next to the lumps of dirt it could be a disguised molehill or it could be aliens from another planet.

    Ask again with more info.

  4. It is a gopher(s).  One can make several hills quickly.  Moles leave raised runs (the top of their tunnels).

I live in a remote area and watch for dirt being flicked into the air when they are making the hill.  Then I use a shotgun to stop them.
