I only had a few bucks in my bank account and i accidentally used my debit card for a purchase.?

i intended to use another card which had more then enough money in the account. why did the first bank card approve the transaction when there was not enough money in that account?

  1. Do you have an overdraft protection on your account?  If not did you use your ATm card as credit?  If that is the case then it will go thru wheather you have the $ or not but your bank will charge you a fee ranging from $25.00 to $30.00 dollars for a NSF charge.


  2. depending on the financial institution in question...

    at one in particular, your debit card will be approved whether you actually have the funds at that exact moment or not, with times changing and direct deposits and credits ect a lot of banks are not choosing to embarrass you at the check-out line when your card is denied because the thought is there may still be items going through your account before the end of the business day that will cover you. in the event that your account posts negative at the end of the day generally your card will not be accepted the following days due to the actual posted balance being negative....but in your case everything, even that charge at the store is still considered pending....and again this is why (again depending on the financial institution) if you get to your bank and make a deposit that same day, that deposit will post (at the end of the business day) before that debit at the store...(despite the time order factor) therefore not charging an overdraft fee.
