I've recently bought an air conditioner, and I realized that I only have one outlet in my room. Right now, I have four plugs on my power extender: Computer, monitor, speaker, and cellphone. Will it be dangerous to plug in my air conditioner?

  1. YES!!!!!  Not only could you blow a fuse, but you could start a fire in the wall!

  2. yes, you must have a different outlet for it.

You will have way too many and it will blow.

check the A/C also..see if it needs the more powerful outlet,

then the ones you use for your computer etc.

Please check that first.  It would be useless to put the wrong

outlet in, you would not be able to use the A/C in your room until you put the other outlet in.

  3. Yes.

The breaker will have capacity written on it.  Compare it to the products pluged in.

Usually AC should have its own outlet.

  4. The wall outlet is probably rated to 15 amps (you have to check your breaker box to know for sure.) It might be 20 amps.

Your entire computer system and phone is maybe taking 500 watts (ballpark 5 amps).

That still leaves 10 amps for the A/C.

Now try and read the label on the A/C and see how much current it needs.

Also, if you have a breaker box, and not a fuse box, go ahead and plug it in and see what happens.  It will not be a fire hazard.  If you exceed the rating, the breaker will pop.  And, of course, your computer will lose power.

window air units can be as low as 5 amps, or as high as 15 amps.  If yours is a smaller unit then you are probably ok.

another thought, when they kick on the compressor, there is a large surge that pulls the voltage down a bit, i wonder if that would be enough to make your PC re-boot...

Holy cow, I just reread the question "POWER EXTENDER" - do NOT plug an air conditioner into a power extender!! There is not protection on that like there is on the plug in the wall.  ONLY Plug an A/C into a wall outlet!!!!!!!
