  1. It was most likely not invented by the French.

The name "French toast" is attested to be from English soldiers serving on campaign in France during the Hundred Years' War who, upon being provided rations consisting solely of stale bread and tea, combined the ingredients to make it more palatable. The precise origins of the recipe are unknown.

  2. French Toast" is called "Pain Perdu" in France. Perhaps it is you who is ignorant .....

  3. Hi there Peter, I don't mean to laugh but 'French Toast' is an American invention :-)

There's no way an American would know this unless they asked a French person, so I do sympathise with you.  I've lived in both USA and France, and there were many things in the US I didn't know too, but it was fun to learn about another culture.

As a quick tip, everything you know which begins with the word "French" probably didn't originate in France. :-)

A few examples are French poodle [called un caniche], French fries [called 'frites'], French toast [no equivalent - it's just bread dipped in beaten eggs and fried].

The French have similar words which start with 'English' but are not actually English phrases.

That's the best bit about travelling - you get to be adventurous and try out different things in foreign places.  You can sample all the amazing French food [you can always have French toast when you go back home], and practice a little bit of French language while you're there.

If you treat every day like an adventure, you'll have a wonderful time.

PS - calling the French 'frogs' is considered to be very bad taste, but I'm sure you would never say that out loud to a French person.

PSS - If you research a new place before you go to visit, you'll enjoy it much more, and you'll be open to new sights, sounds, tastes ... have fun!

    Bonjour!

  4. Just as you won't call a hamburger an American sandwich we won't use the name French toast for our pain perdu. Only foreigners would add the name of the country to the name of the dish.

French fries come from Belgium. And you are the only ones to give them a nationality.

French poodles real name is dwarf poodle (caniche nain) to differentiate them from the much bigger breed of hunting poodle (bet you didn't know that).

    French kiss is a kiss

French leave is English leave... (a bit of a t*t for tat, there)

    Keribit! ('so there' in frog)

  5. The French don't eat toast, they eat frogs, didn't you learn anything in your trailer park school of ignerts?

  6. That would be because "French Toast" is called "Pain Perdu" in France.

The real question is why you can't speak French. Are you retarded?

  7. French Toast is not a French cuisine . Maybe it would benefit you to look up culture and avoid these kinds of mistakes in the future to avoid embarrassment. Also, you might want some tolerance classes. It really doesn't benefit anyone to be intolerant and ignorant.

  8. wow. um the french are actually smart. and dont EVER call them retarted. maybe you are because you didnt know where it came from. and by the way ribbit.

  9. Sorry to say that but you're the r****d if you haven't researched that before your trip. If it's such a big favorite of yours one would think you would look it up before travelling.

  10. No, the French are not retarded.  Unfortunately, many people who travel to France are arrogant and rude and are poor representatives of the country they represent.  Perhaps you should vacation at home next time.

  11. Although the exact origin of French toast is unclear, sources agree that the dish does not stem from classical French cuisine. Toast it may be, but "French" it is not!

Just like french fries, the origin of french toast is not from France.

  12. French toast is not pain perdu! parin perdu is one cake.

You will not found French fries, or fridum frie too the name is frites. neither less Franch sause. this one don't existe.

Frogs? The french lover you want to write I'm sure.

Be carreful a lot of guy says they don't speak english, but french learne engluish at school they are just affaid to used one bad prononciation

  13. It's a shame you had to embarrass yourself with your own ignorance you r****d.

That would be like me going to the US and asking for an American hot dog, which is what we call them in NZ because we have our own kind.  Or, going to France and asking for French vanilla icecream which we have here too.  Duhh!

  14. Yes we're retardated !! never heard about French Toast in France !! I don't know what is it !!

Seems to be French only by name your famous toasts !!!

  15. Ha ha. You are stupid and it makes me laugh!!!

"Don't they know their own food" haaaa ha aha ha. This is priceless.

It's called Freedom Toast in France.

Ha ha ha ha ha you racist freak!

  16. I have never seen "French toast" on the menu in France and as others have said French toast is not actually a French food.  BTW the "French doughnuts" in some US doughnut shops are not French food either.  The best food in France is French food (cafe au lait with a croissant or eclair is great). An added benefit is that the portions are smaller than in the states so you can get great flavor (and not too many calories).

  17. FRENCH TOAST IS NOT FRENCH. THE SAME WITH FRENCH FRIES!!!

  18. French toast is not French. You call attention to your own ignorance in this case by not only making erroneous assumptions, but in making a point of being obnoxious about it. Unless of course you were attempting to be funny, in which case all I can say is better luck next time. Lastly, I'd say that if this is your approach to dealing with people from other countries, you'd be doing yourself and others a tremendous service by staying home.
