I just got betta flakes, because the pet store guide said that variety is a good idea for bettas. Unfortunately, I put a bit much in. Instead of taking about 5 minutes like suggested for him to eat, it took him a lot longer. He's a slow eater, but still. Will he be okay? Any suggestions for removing flakes in the event that something happens again?

  1. DONT FEED YOUR BETTA BELOVED FLAKES!!!!! NO NO NO!!!! Pellet food is better and they eat it like there's no tomorrow. Yes your betta will be fine but switch to pellets, Hikari Betta Biogold. Also, NEVER feed him frozen or freeze dried foods as this causes Dropsy, a deadly fish disease.

  2. He should be fine. What I suggest doing is removing the food with a net, or use a turkey baster to suck the food out. Just fill it with fresh water, almost like a water change. And you should take any food out after 5 minutes so he doesn't over eat. He will get enough food in 5 minutes, trust me. If you are worried about that you can try 2-3 smaller feedings a day.

  3. Don't feed him for two or three days and he should be fine. You can tell how full he is by just looking at his tummy.. Keep in mind that a betta's stomach is about the size of his eye! After those two or three days, boil a small pea, take off the skin, and feed him one or two small bits to regulate and clear out his system and he should be perfectly fine.

In the future, instead of tipping the container of flakes (which I assume you did), take out a tiny pinch with your (clean and dry) fingers, put them on your other palm, and then pinch in the correct amount. If any extra flakes fall in, just scoop the water and flakes up with a paper or plastic cup. Or, if you have a siphoning tube that you use for your water changes, that should work also.

    Hope this helps, good luck!

  4. Suck them out with the syphon that you should be using to do your regular partial water changes.
