Question:

I own 3 cats. If my neighbour installs an ultrasonic deterrent will it affect my garden aswell & upset my cats

He's recently installed a row of plastic spikes on his fence to keep my cats out. This came as quite a surprise as he has not spoken to me or indicated that my cats are causing him any problems. I've since watched 2 of my cats find various ingenious ways to get across the fence despite the spikes, so I'm now worried he will try something else to stop them. My main concern is if he installs some kind of electronic device: will it make my cats feel uncomfortable in my garden too? I'm worried that if our garden becomes unpleasant, they might just leave home. Any advice gratefully accepted.

  1. I thought that in the UK, people had to display warning notices when they fitted anti-theft devices such as Prikka strip?

If your neighbour does purchase a sonic deterrent, how much this will affect your cats, will depend upon the model that is purchased.  Some of them have a range of 10 or 12m.  However, it must be mounted with a clear line of sight of the problem area.  Any objects in the way, even dense foliage, will block the sound and diminish the deterrent effect.   I don't know how large your gardens are, but assuming they are separated by a fence or hedge, your cats shouldn't be affected in your own garden.  I don't think sonic alarms are harmful to cats, they just don't enjoy the sound they make.

  2. Being in South Africa we have a different kind of solution as most people have single or double strand electric fences to keep people out of their property. This works fine for cats as well and seems to cause them no discomfort so long as they stay well away which they tend to do. Speak to your neighbor, perhaps he has some specific problem with the kitties that you can deal with in a more specific way, a barricade for his fishpond or whatever the problem is. Good luck and I hope the kitties are happy. :)

  3. you should go talk to your neighbour.. this sounds like it could get pretty nasty...

  4. What is wrong with you people? Some of you are just answering for the sake of it, you pathetic cat hates, go find somewhere else to rant.

Now, I would suggest that your neighbour didn't know HOW to ask you (?) so he/she just put them up!

The only thing I can suggest is you could have a look on the site I have linked below.

    Good luck! :)

  5. i bet it upsets him when your cats shite all over his lawn

  6. Perhaps he is fed up with your cats crapping in his garden (no offense), especially if he has young children..it can be very irritating and quite understandable I'm affraid,  I'm sure he will try other methods first.. there are lots of chemicals repellents, he can use first..the Ultrasonic device you speak of, works on movement and will only go off when your cats enters his garden, your cats won't be affected in your garden.. he probably hasn't spoken to you, because really what can you do!.

  7. Keep the cats out of other peoples gardens then so they wont become upset! There your responsibility.

  8. to make sure that it doesn't come to that maybe you should put something up. they have those invis-fence things for cats as well as dogs.it would keep you kitties safe and at home and also it would save your neighbor the money he would have to spend trying to keep your cats out otherwise. since they are your cats that would be the responsible and neighborly thing to do. ask at your local petsmart.
