From what I know the boat was not in the water this year. The motor started up and ran well after a starter repair. It was only going for about 20-30 seconds before I killed the engine. Should I winterize it?

  1. You'll always want to winterize your boat motor. They are too expensive to not take care of them.  Also, it sounds like you don't know if there is water left in it.  If you started it for the 20-30 seconds, there should be water in it; not for an over heating issue, but those rubber impellers get damaged very easily  and need the water to lubricated them.

Follow what your manual tells you to do.

  2. suggest you check "I BOATS.com. a great site for boat maintenance.

  3. always. especially if you live in a colder climate region. if it sits outside all winter, drain the motor oil, don't take the chance.

  4. It all depends on the climate you live in.  If you live where it wont get that cold than I would just run it out of fuel so the fuel doesn't go bad.  Other than that leave it alone till next year.

  5. yes you do, you ran fuel through it !

  6. winterize it!

what does it cost to winterize a motor??

if it's a new 4stroke, I would do it anyways just because condensation gets into the crank oil. Never hurts to stabilize fuel before storage, and the gear oil can always use a flush.

if its a 2, its cheaper yet basically just fuel stabilizer and a gear oil change.

either way, what is the value of knowing you are doing the best for the machine that will be pushing you safely home for years to come?? subtract from that amount the cost of winter servicing.

if you come up with a negative, then I will send you my address and you can give me the motor okay??
