What I'd really like to know is, if there are some of you out there who own their own business, how much are you paying monthly for health insurance? I need to cover my wife and 2 kids and not having insurance doesn't seem to be working. Is AFLAC good?

  1. If you and your family are somewhat healthy then it should not be a problem qualifying for a California individual health insurance plan. CA individiual health plans are much cheaper than CA group plans.

Some of the top companies to consider in California include:

    1. PacifiCare (United Healthcare)

    2. Aetna

    3. Kaiser Permanente

    4. Blue Cross Blue Shield

    5. Humana

Here is an article with some more detail on self employed health insurance in California:

  2. Family health insurance runs around $1200 a month for a low deductible plan.  There aren't any short cuts.

Aflac is a brand name - like State Farm.  THey have LOTS Of different plans.  Some plans are better than others.

You really need to sit down with the guy that does the rest of your insurance, to get some quotes.  But with health insurance, you get what you pay for.  And it's EXPENSIVE.

  3. You can have a "group plan" if there are more than 2 of you working for the company. Group plans are guaranteed to cover you even if you have a health challenge like heart disease or cancer.

If it's just you at your company, you may qualify for some group plans depending on where you live. There is a good one in Northern CA.

If you do not qualify for group, and you are healthy, you can get very good individual insurance like TONIK from Anthem Blue Cross try http://tonikrates.com for rates. TONIK doesn't cover maternity, but it does Medical, Dental and Vision at a low rate.

AFLAC specializes in Dread Disease like cancer coverage, and accident disability. It is usually in addition to a health plan.

  4. Blue Shield offers affordable individual policies.

  5. AFLAC is great...as a supplemental insurance.  They don't do major medical very well, in my opinion.

Depending on your age, the number of employees in your company, zip code and your major concerns, the price to cover a family of your size can be between $265 per month (total) up to $4,273, or more.  You really ought to speak to a professional to find out what plan option would best suit your needs.  Coverage doesn't HAVE to cost you an arm and a leg.

Blue Shield HSA-compatible and value plans are inexpensive right now, and can be a great option if your agent explains them to you correctly.  If you are in Los Angeles or San Diego Health Net's Silver HMO network is very reasonable.  If you are in a major city and are alright with Kaiser, their plans are usually very low cost.  Aetna, Blue Cross, Cigna and PacifiCare/ UHC are running a little on the expensive side right now, so i would avoid them unless you find a specific plan that you fall in love with.

  6. California has jury verdicts that are horrible.

  8. Aflac is indeed a summplement insurance plan..

What I currently have is AmeriPlan USA... I started off with one of their plans... liked it used it.. and then found out I could tell others about it and get a commission off of it as well!  so I thought why not!.. so you can check them out at ameriplanusa.com.. they have been around for 16 years..and are a discount for a service health benefits company.. so it's not like normal insurance where you wait forever.. and only have limited visits where you pay 50 dollars a time.  you can use it as much as you like, as often as you like or as little as you like.  The price is right.. just a dental plan is $19.95 a month, Basic health is 30 per month per household..and total health is 40 a month per household..and that includes medical dental, vision, prescription drugs, chiropractic, lab work, braces... everything health related. even cosmetic surgery you get discounts on!

I have 2 kids under two.. and they get ear infections about once a month. so what I do is..every time they go to the doctor..with ameriplan they give you 40-60% off the visit.. then you get 25-50% off the prescriptions.. and one visit is less than the normal monthly ins. premium for a family of 4.

you can also go to any hospital of your choice..and anything over $2500, ameriplan has a advocate work with the hospital and gets that bill lowered for you as much as possible.. (usually over 50% off).. and then you can pay off that bill interest free over the next 1-4 years.. (that's what I did when I had a baby 6 months ago...)

So if this interest you.. please visit the site.. and my contact info is under the contact section.. i'd be happy to talk to you further about the coverage and how the discounts work.. anytime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. central time.. of course.. cause my babies need sleep!

I sure hope this helps.. my family is in the same boat..my husband doesn't get coverage through his employer.
