I took an at home study program from the College Network 3 years ago and paid the money off in full in accordance with my contract more than a year and a half ago. The TX comptrollers office found them in non-compliance with sales tax laws of the state and ordered them to pay the sales tax. Seems to me that is their responsibility to follow the tax laws in any state they operate in and that they should have billed it at the time of service not 3 years later. I don't want a blip on my credit but I don't feel their failure to follow tax laws is my responsibility.

  1. Whether you pay it or not, they will be required to submit the sales tax.

As for them coming after you for reimbursement, it may be a bit sticky.

It's kinda doubtful that they will go to any great lengths to collect from you.

I don't see how they can do anything to your credit record.

No billing exists to substantiate an amount not paid.

  2. The company screwed up and is sabre rattling.  If you paid what you contracted to pay, that should be all you owe.
