the door was previously painted with the same type of paint (I think) but after I painted with exterior latex paint (natural wood color) the yellow stains (powder like) comes up after it dries. I can use my nail to scratch it off but then it comes back..... can someone give me an idea what I need to do? thank you

  1. Sand the door down until it is smooth.  Invest in a good exterior primer like KILZ.  After that has dried, repaint as you like.

I am not sure what you mean by natural wood color paint.  I hope you haven't tried to use stain over paint.

  2. You have a chemical reaction going on between what existed and what you're applying.  Advice?  First of all I'll tell you and everyone reading this that you don't paint doors and trim with latex paint.

    Why?

You don't get the aesthetics, finish and durability from latex/acrylic that you get from using oil based products. Second, directly relative to your case, you can't sand latex paint. . . it gums and burns, contrary to oil which sands and feathers effectively.  Painted and repainted doors done with latex/acrylic look like h**l and worse with every new coat.

What can you do now? Three things. . .   1. Strip the door down and start again.  2. Apply a coat of Glidden Gripper Primer to seal out this staining and repaint (Glidden Gripper is the correct primer/sealer for this circumstance).  3. Replace the door and start from scratch.

Between door number 1 & 3 I would choose door #3.  Besides, haven't you thought about replacing this door. . . nows the time!
