I want to buy/hire purchase a Transit Van and use it to gain employment. Unfortunately I am told that you can't drive it unless you have Cat C on your license.

The way I understand it is that you are limited by the maxium laden weight of the vehicle rather than its size.

I am also lead to beleive that the small wheel based vans are around 2.5 tonne, would this be ok to drive on my car licence?

  1. YOU CAN DRIVE A TRANSIT ON A NORMAL DRIVING LICENCE NO PROB

  2. yes you can drive a transit van on your licence

  3. It depends on the maximum authorised mass of the transit in question. You can only drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kgs (3.5tonnes)

    please visit: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dri...

"Maximum authorised mass is the maximum weight of the vehicle that may be used on the road including the maximum load the vehicle may safely carry. This is normally shown on a plate fitted to the vehicle.

If a vehicle is unlikely to be used at its potential maximum weight most vehicles may be downplated, i.e. the vehicles springs or other components can be changed, so that only a lighter load can be carried. The maximum authorised mass or gross weight is a factor in determining what driving entitlement is required"

If the MAM is 3.5 tonnes or under you are OK to drive on your cat B car licence. However, if it is over 3.5 tonnes it comes under cat c1 (not cat c) which is 3.5 - 7.5 tonnes and you need to have take another test for this catergory.

Cat C is for anything OVER 7.5 tonnes - that would be a HUGE transit van lol!!

  4. Yes you can drive a Transit Van on a normal Car Licence. You can buy one no probs but most companys will only hire them to over 21's. Also Insurance will be quite high if you are young!
