I passed my driving test this morning, 1st time, so I want to be able to drive the family car, it is a vauxhall astra 1.6, my parents are on holiday, so I don't have the details.

What is the legal stuff about insurance, does my parents insurance cover third party cover as standard/minimum? Thanx.

  1. I believe they'll have to add you to their insurance since it is associated more with the car and driver and not each separately.  For instance, you can have one driver or multiple drivers associated with one or more cars.  There will be an additional (and probably considerable) premium charge for you as well.

  2. you cannot drive any car unless you are insured on it. if you were practicing in the astra then you should be insured, but if not its very unlikely. you will need to add yourself to their policy, and you will need them to do that as they have the details. it will be very expensive, and you will probs need to pay an admin charge. you may want to wait for your parents policy to expire, as who theyre with now may not be cheap. i recommend RAC for insurance on your parents car, it was £300 pound extra for me (17y.o. male) and my sis (who hasnt yet passed), which is 5 times cheaper than norwich union

  3. Evidently you're in the UK.  Not many Vauxhaull's here in the US.

Here in the US, there are numerous lines of coverage.

Liability coverage covers the other guy if you're at fault for the accident.

Material damage lines cover your car regardless of who's at fault, or if your car is stolen or water damaged or etc.

Medical coverage covers doctor/hospital bills if you're hurt in an accident.

Uninsured Motorist covers you like the other guy's insurance would if he had any, but only pays if he doesn't have any..

  4. You will need to ask them the details and to check the policy. If not you will need to buy insurance before you drive. It can be expensive for first time buyers.

  5. Don't do anything, wait til your parents get back.

  6. Your name must be on the cars insurance policy, and a new premium must be paid for this. As a new Driver and if you are between 18 to 23 years of age, be prepared to pay anything between £2000/ 3000 more insurance cover.

Your family insurance may state that the  only one allowed to drive the car is your father. If you use it without insurance cover, then you are risking your new licence.

  7. You must be a NAMED driver on your parents policy in order to drive their car.

You cannot ring up the insurers and do this whilst they are on holiday. The insurers will only speak to the policyholder.

You CANNOT drive your parents car until they have given you permission and that the insurance company have been informed.

If you take it out whilst they are away, you are breaking the law, and will have your licence revoked immediately as a new driver only needs 6 points on their licence to lose it. You would get this much for driving with no insurance.

    Wait til they get home.
