I owed $305 for my taxes and I sent a check to pay it in full after the April 15th deadline. The IRS cashed the check. I just received my stimulus check today and instead of it being $600 it was $295 because they deducted what I owed from that as well. So now I have overpaid by $305 and I really need to get that back. Does anyone know how I go about getting that money back? I tried to call, but the lines are tied up. Thanks!

  1. The way this "should happen" is that you will receive a check for the $305 with interest at some point in the future. Please note that the interest is reportable income subject to tax.  If you have not received anything by Oct 15th you should call them.  At the moment I am told that the wait to call is hours.

  2. Unfortunately, you need to call.  Due to all the idiots who are calling to see when they will get their stimulus check (who are simply impatient), you will have trouble getting through.  Once found/transferred, the money would get to you in probably 3 weeks.  If you write, allow 6 weeks.

    The possibilities are:

    1.  The check was deposited to the right account and the right tax year...but this is unlikely since you sent the check 2 months ago.

    2.  The check was deposited to the right account but to 2008, not 2007.  If you wrote 2007 1040 on the memo line, the money can be transferred back to 2007 (where it will refund), but you have to call or write.

    3.  The check was deposited to the wrong account.  With bank account info (the stuff on the back of your check...though sometimes the dollar amount, the date and the routing number/account number are enough to find it in the IRS system), the assistor can transfer the money, but again you have to call or write.

    4. Your check never cleared....

    5.  Your check was sent to the state....

  3. The IRS knows this but their system hasn't caught up to fixing it.  You should receive an additional payment of $305.

If you do not receive it, I would try to call in August or later.
