  1. I always budget for about $2000 (£1000) per month when backpacking, but have a credit card as backup.

This generally covers cheap hostels, cooking simple meals in hostel kitchens, making my own sandwiches from supermarkets etc.

The Travellers Lounge has a useful guide and you can also check hostel prices too

  2. 5 months that is a long time

$2500 that would give you 500 mouth but that is not that much... Try looking it up on-line.

  3. My budget thus far is (in Canadian/American dollars, as they're close to the same about now) this - and I budget a little high, by the way:

    1600 (Round trip flight)

1000 (Emergency fund, not to be touched unless you seriously need to get home early or your pack gets stolen, or whatever)

1500 (Trains, using the eurail pass of your choice (www.eurail.com)

500 (Train/bus/cab/metro fare not covered by your train pass)

2250 (accommodation, based on 15/day, 150 days - more or less depending on your choice of hostel/campground)

1500 (high food budget, based on 10/day, but you could get away with much less if you cook your own food, eat a little less, stuff like that)

400 (spending, based on 20/wk for 20 weeks)

    ------------------

    8750

Keep in mind the train pass I picked was the youth global for three months, so it may cost you more or less depending on the pass you pick.

Include costs such as buying a tent, sleeping bag, replacement clothing, stuff like that. Be realistic with your budget - if you know you're a big eater or are easily tempted by eating out, increase your food budget. With the eurail pass, be realistic about how much you think you'll be travelling. A three month pass is unnecessary if you only plan on taking the train every week or so - instead, opt for the 15 days in two month pass. Or, pick out a regional pass, design your own, whatever. Remember that you can rent bikes if you want to save on travel. Also, www.couchsurfing.com is a spectacular resource and is HUGELY popular among backpackers, a great resource. GSM phones are very handy if you want to keep safely in touch, even if it's just to call ahead to book a hostel. Try www.telestial.com. Good luck!
